Derrick Jackson is an acclaimed trombonist, educator, composer, and arts advocate whose career spans more than 25 years. A native of Georgia, Derrick has become one of the Southeast’s most respected musical voices, known for blending jazz, hip-hop, gospel, classical, and contemporary influences into a distinctive sound that continues to inspire audiences and students alike.

Before graduating from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Derrick earned a coveted role playing trombone in the national touring production of Forever Swing, which opened the door to performing with legendary entertainer Barry Manilow. These formative experiences established the foundation for a career defined by versatility, innovation, and artistic excellence.

After relocating to Atlanta, Derrick quickly became a sought-after performer, educator, and clinician. His diverse performance career includes appearances with some of the most respected names in music, including Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Nettles, Josh Groban, Jennifer Hudson Terri Lyne Carrington, NAS, Gucci Mane, Russell Gunn’s Royal Krunk Jazz Orkestra, the Atlanta Latin Jazz Orchestra, Joe Gransden Big Band, Marcus Lewis Big Band, The Jazz Legacy Project, Larry Wilson’s Black Gold Orchestra, and numerous other acclaimed ensembles.

Among his many career highlights, Derrick performed in the world premiere of Douglas Tappin’s I Dream, appeared in the Farrelly Brothers film The Three Stooges, and recorded trombone parts for Rick Ross’s critically acclaimed album Teflon Don, collaborating with artists such as Jadakiss and T.I.

His work extends into theater and live productions, where he has performed for major Broadway touring productions at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, including MJ the Musical, Funny Girl, and The Sound of Music. He has also contributed to productions at the Alliance Theatre, including Trading Places, Water for Elephants, Millions, and The Preacher’s Wife, while recently performing in Mean Girls at City Springs Theatre.

As a recording artist, Derrick continues to push creative boundaries. His recent single, “On My Momma,” featuring trombonist Richard Sherrington and saxophonist Akeem Marable, showcases his signature blend of soulful musicianship and modern artistry. He is currently developing his highly anticipated solo project and new group, Derrick Jackson Presents: The ATL Mixtape.

Beyond the stage, Derrick is deeply committed to music education and cultural preservation. He has dedicated his career to teaching, curriculum development, and expanding opportunities for young musicians throughout Georgia. His work amplifies the influence of the African Diaspora on American music while helping shape the next generation of artists through educational leadership and service on multiple state arts and education boards.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts, Derrick received the 2024 State of Georgia Governor’s Award for Arts and Humanities, one of the state’s highest honors for artistic and cultural achievement.
